In my history class here at university my professor gave me an assignment to read the Hindu epoch the Ramayana. Then write a paper about what the epoch shows in terms of how Indian families function, and about power within Indian families.

So I am now wondering after reading it how can the Ramayana be applied to the Indian family?

I can give you a hint about it. Indian families are more traditional type and older members are considered wise and experienced. In Indian family father is the supreme leader. Hindu rituals are important aspect of their life and Caste system is still strong among Indian families.

Ehm, well I haven't read the Ramayana but I'm wondering how much of it can really be ascribed to modern families.

I'll help you out in anyway I can (about modern families not the Ramayana), what do you wish to know?

Indian families are very closely tied.

SriRam's committment to his father is taken as an example today also by many Indians.

In India you can even find 3 generations of people living in a single house.Indians take care of their old aged parents and support their children till they are self sufficient. In many cases the parents take care of their sons and daughters till they get their higher education completed and then get a job and move out of the house.
These sons and daughters in return take good care of their parents in their old age till death
