A piece I have done dealing with the role women played in ancient Sparta prior to Roman conquest. Deals with their education, soci-political status, diets, fashion and other fun facts.

Interesting, although I have little basis for judging its accuracy or thoroughness.  One thing you might check.  Women were allowed to sponsor chariot teams at the Olympics, and thus win, they were not allowed to race in the Olympics or even to observe.
You might look at the background of the Helen myth, how her statue ritually gets kidnapped.

Women acted as irregular soldiers in many confrontations.

I don't know much about the Amazons, but I do know that Viking "Shield Maidens" fought side by side with their menfolk, both at home and abroad.

In modern times,of course, women are playing an increasingly important part in many military forces, and in almost every category.

Shield Maidens did fight side by side in military battles and even led some raids. As tough as Spartan women were and as intensively trained they were there is little evidence they fought in wars (unless it was Sparta being invaded).
