At the Irish folk-songs again....

Jim McCann sings a wonderful rendition as well, but I guess I like Paddy's the most.

Warning....

If you don't want to fall in love with an angel, don't click here..

But since you already clicked - listen to a few of her others songs and be hooked for good.

Northman

Thanks for the clip, it almost brought a tear to my eye.

The injustice of it all!!
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

Good choice ALLAN - the legend bowing out...

Good selection toyomotor...

The best ballad, the best band and the best singer for ballads, frankly, it doesn't get any better...

I also love Irish music from the Troubles and pre 1916.

The Field of Athenry;

The Wind That Moves The Barley;

Rising of The Moon; etc.

But I also like the Rebel Rousing modern tunes too, like:

Go On Home British Soldier;

One Shot Paddy;

The Black and Tans;

There are hundreds more.
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

Yes, he is a sephardic jewish. He used 27 instruments in this song. Mix of Balkan, Oriantal, Caucasian and even Gypsie influence. And of course a bit of R&B... Big smile

This could be a long list, but I'll pick a few:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tw8-TlQBcBA&feature=channel_video_title

Kraftwerk - Heavy Metal Kids (Jawdropping ability before they turned electronic, amazing)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb8d_Mo_tOU

Omar-S - The Further You Look The Less You Will See (I think it's a work of art)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrBZeWjGjl8

Boards of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy (Nicely ambient, I would consider this hard to dislike)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEsYqncyyes

Drexciya - Birth of New Life (A more acquired taste - composed in mind of the transatlantic crossing of African slaves to America, has that pathos and hope that is only evoked in true art ((in my opinion in this regard Smile))...

I hope you enjoy.

Sorry Pinguin that I have not responded sooner, but I did listen to and liked the material you provided. Some of it takes some getting used to, for my N. Americano ears, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Seko, you just surprised me near to death. You picked Sonny Rollins, doing "I'm an Old Cowhand!"

So I listened, and though the song evolved very slowly, it did finally get my attention. I can just imagine the looks of patrons at a Jazz Club, first hearing the song? LOL

Thanks to both of you!

And Joe! La Roux! I would rather watch and listen to this one, because the imagery is much better. smile!

Most youtube linked songs do not sound very good. The fidelity on this one actually is nice, not a bad tune either.

Interesting, that's the Condor Pasa, that once was recorded by Simon and Garfunkel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pey29CLID3I

If you like that kind of music, perhaps you would like my favorites:

La Partida by Victor Jara. Yes, the same Victor Jara tortured and killed by the gorillas of Pinochet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gw1mju8VsPc

La Partida by Inti-Illimani: A masterpiece

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TvCfFvPdWs

Inti Illimani, Alturas. Alive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5RpuhnymRE

Inti Illimani, Alturas, recorded with condor included. Beautiful.

Or perhaps you preffer Bach on Indigenous Andean instruments. Listen please.

Yes, opuslola, I am not too fond of the derivative and imititative and always go for the original, and frankly just as Elvis "stole" a sound from Louisiana's Black rhythms so too did Miss Lee, Ella in "whiteface". Not to demean the talents of Miss Lee (who most definitely was not a Racist), her success was premised upon imitation of the Fitzgerald sound and she did  achieve a career "covering" Ella originals. Both Ella and Billie Holiday were originals in the world of jazz and Peggy was a "stand in" to suit the prejudices of the time.

More than you know...whether you're right, whether you're wrong, man of my heart I'll string along...
Strangely, Ella was but three years older than Peggy.  Thus they were basically competing for the same following.

I would love to hear Ella's version, which was it seems recorded only one year earlier (1968).

Of course the great Billie Holiday is also one of my favs.  But so is a "mostly unknown" great singer by the name of Shirley Bassie, who really gained world wide fame with her rendition of "Goldfinger", but all of her songs are terrific.

I searched for an on-line version of Ella's "is that all there is?",but could not find it.

As you said, Ella is the best, as this site so well states;

Peggy comes in 16th!
