Hello everyone, and welcome to the Australia, South East Asia & Pacific Forum! Myself and my fellow moderators (Constantine XI, Omar al Hashim, Edgewaters and Sarmat) look forward to overseeing an exciting and interesting series of debates and discussions here. The particular area of history focused on is that of the South East Asian region and Oceania - from the dawn of man to the present. This region stretches from Burma and Indochina, down through the Indonesian archipelago and Australia, out across the whole of the Pacific Ocean and its vast array of islands. Here are a few topics from the archived subforum for your benefit, and to spark conversation:

Can Monarchy survive in Brunei forever?
The roots of Thailand's sex industry
100 things you never knew about SE Asia

If you feel the need to contact a moderator about something regarding this section of the forum, do no hesitate to contact myself, or any of the other staff mentioned above.

Hello All,
I'm Richard Shears, a journalist based in Australia - and who travels quite a lot through the Pacific. I noticed that a couple of years ago Omar asked for information on Vanuatu's history, particularly relating to independence.
I've just re-written an old book I wrote on the so-called Coconut War that broke out just prior to independence in 1980. The rewrite is now an eBook, 'The Coconut War: Vanuatu and the Struggle for Independence'. It has been updated with a new cover showing rebel leader Jimmy Stevens and his 'bow and arrow' warriors, along with an updated text.
It's written in a journalistic style, portraying events as they occurred while I was there, but importantly there is quite a lot of interesting historical background. It's not an academic work, but hopefully a good, informative read. If anyone wants to get hold of it, it's going to cost a whopping 0.99 cents, or equivalent, through Amazon.
The website is: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Coconut-War-Struggle-Independence-ebook/dp/B00787DSIE
I'll be back, as I'm working on another fascinating regional event, which should be available in a few months.
All the best. Great site, by the way.
Richard Shears

Hey Richard,
I only just saw this post. I'll be sure to check it out. $1 (or was that 1 cent?) sounds within my budget.
