A bloke and his crew sail thier ship through the Pillars of Hercules, bound for India.

Now, instead of making a left hand turn, sailing down the coast of Africa and making another half left-in which case he would have found India easily, he makes only a half turn left out of the Pillars.

Eventually, after having missed the New World completely, he arrives in South America where he sets about murdering the locals, spreading disease and stealing their treasures.

When he gets home, he's acclaimed as a hero.

But, wait, where's all the silver, silks, jewels and spices he was meant to pick up? What's happened to all of the goods he set out with to trade?

Some navigator!!

Some trader!!

It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

South America is part of the "new world."  Isn't it?

Are you thinking of anyone in particular? or just in general?

I am not sure what you are trying to get at, however, the distinction between trader and pirate can sometimes be mighty fine.  Vikings would be an example of that.

Just a bit of fun.

It's the Ireland that was born in me.

Why would he be acclaimed a hero without the booty to prove he had been somewhere? Cue some increasingly scornful comments from the crowd.

Still not sure what your point is, toyomotor.

You said he stole treasure.  But you ask where are the silks, silver, spices and gems he was supposed to have when he shows up?  It is not going to matter _what_ the treasure is, when he shows up, does it?
(I mean as long as it is not pokemon cards or beanie babies).

When he returns, _does_ he have treasure or _doesn't_ he?  When someone says they will come back with silver, and they return with gold?  Is anyone going to reject it because it was gold instead of silver???

1. There is no point.

2. The post was a minor indulgence on my part because I just knew that you'd bite. That the post was, in some small way accurate, is neither here nor there.

3. Anyway, why is it called the New World, it was there for a very long time before you know who bumped into it.

Put this one to bed I think or it'll just get murkier.LOL

It was new to the people who found it.

Was it ever lost? LOL

It certainly wasn't to the people who were there before the term New World was coined.

(Just a bit of mindless diversion)

Not all things that are found were first lost.

If you find gold (a mine, or even placer deposits), did it have to be lost before you found it?

If you find a penny, well then someone must have 'lost' the penny.

I agree with caldrail, the new world was new to the people who found it.  Just like when you find a good restaurant, you say, "let's go to the new restaurant." even though it may have been there for awhile.  It is "new" from your perspective.
