I like your term, Western Asia. Sounds neutral. Actually, we need some synonyms. The Eastern Mediterranean emphasizes the seaboard looking from the sea. The Middle East and the Levant are traditionally Eurocentric. Syria-Palestine can be applied to some historic periods.
