'The Last Alliance' has not yet turned to the top of my favourite Battlelord albums. The 'Evernight' is better. However, yes, from 'the Last Alliance', I'd pick 'The Great Gathering'.

Currently, started it as well. Smile

I am a HUGE fan of metal, especially that on the progressive side.  In the power and fantasy metal genre, I have not gotten into the bands you mentioned.  However, I do like Kamelot, Rhapsody of Fire, Heavenly, Pyramaze, and Falconer.

Go and try out the bands I named. If you want to, I can give a few song recommendations for each.

I personally enjoy Nightwish as well, though not to the extent I used to.

But metal wins!

If by "loud" you mean too "heavy," you might check out the following song from the same album:

In Christ, loyal emperor and autocrat of the Romans.

Blind Guardian has their voice and sound, plus good guitar moves (for real guitarist, you've got to listen to Dragonforce though... Dragonforce might leave a guiter-friend breathless)
Blind Guardian - To France (good remake of Oldfield's, just a good song)
Blind Guardian - Another Stranger Me
Blind Guardian - Otherland

Summoning is more of a depth-instrumental thing than proper everyday metal...
Summoning - Mirdautas Vras
Summoning - Arcenstone

Elvenking is just... nice, at least for me.
Elvenking - Poison Tears
Elvenking - The Winter Wake

And Dragonforce (metal fans need this): 'Starfire' and 'Once in a Lifetime' are two great ones.

And yes, Power and Fantasy Metal are more to my liking than some Viking Death Metal.

If I may suggest to you, try Symphony X. The following is a good example - it has probably everything you could expect from a Symphony X song and Russell delivers some really solid vocals.

Oh yes, I am a big fan of Symphony X!  However, I have always considered them within the more progressive, rather than power, vein of metal.  The New Mythology Suite was good.  But I really like The Odyssey and Paradise Lost.  The video for "Set the World on Fire" from PL is awesome!

I never got into thrash that much.  Metallica's And Justice for All is good and is really the last album by them I really liked.  But it has more prog influences than thrash.

As for thrash, my two favourites are Megadeth and Kreator. Megadeth have excellent guitar parts, just check out Rust in Peace. And Kreator have that dark, haunting atmosphere in their songs, but quite sloppy guitar soli sometimes.

I wasn't implying Symphony X weren't progressive.

LOL No problem.  I don't really detach power metal from progressive either.  I think it is a subgenre, actually.

For those of you who are into the old school metal and prog, check out the cover Dream Theater just did of Rainbow's "Stargazer."  LaBrie nails the Dio impression!

Dream Theater, "A Nightmare to Remember"

..wow…bloody great!!!....that good old Sabbathy thunder and rain intro with some meaty Sabbath like heaviness, then all the crunch you can eat!! great arrangements of slow, fast, smooth and melodic music….nice, very nice…

I dont mind Dragonforce can get a bit too similar although I have to agree with Rider about the guitar work..Breathless indeed!!!..

..what’s wrong with going all the way up to 11!!!!!!

Originally posted by Slayertplsko Slayertplsko wrote:

..thrash??..oh yes..(Slayer are my favourite thrash band)..not that familiar with much of Kreator's work but Megadeth are top notch.... 'In My Darkest Hour'   is a top metal tune...the 'Rust in Peace' album is faultless....'Hanger 18'…..brilliant..

..but this is my favourite 'deth tune....

Wake up Dead (needs to be turned up to 11!!!!)

..here is a couple of old skooll thrash tunes..great stuff

Nuclear Assault-Critical Mass (get pass the Headbangers Ball bit and this brutal stuff..)

Exodus-Bonded by Blood

Testament-The Haunting

Could not leave without adding a tune from the infamous Venom. you know, they really wasn’t that bad at all!!!!

7th Date of Hell live at Hammersmith Odeon London 1984

..happy thrashing….all the best..AoO…

PS-apologies for all the formatting errors in my posts, its carrying over from yesterday and its pissing me off now..i think it is something to do with writing up in Word first then copy/pasting probs....the Black Sabbath curse must be kicking in...
