European Medieval Economic/Religious History point.

What do you think of this you knowledgeable people....

That the medieval Roman Catholic church introduced the rule on fish on a Friday because it dominated the sale of fish across mainland Europe. It used religious reasons to justify it to the masses. However, the main motivation was the fish stocks ruled over by Monks in the great fish ponds and Fishing rights along the rivers of Europe controlled, in a great part, by Bishoprics.

I've never found any one definite source for this. So I base my theory on a lot of reading across several books and journals with little bits and pieces here and there, such as http://journals.cambridge.org/action/displayAbstract?fromPage=online&aid=7560128

Also, getting away from the specific data as evidence I point to the church culture at the time such as the selling of indulgences etc.

So what do think?

Sounds like an unsubstantiated theory, which could be (at least partially) true, but not anywhere near proven.  I imagine that if one looked up in a catechism, it would give you a rationale for fish.  Which came first the fish or the fish ponds?  Symbolically, I imagine the fish came first.

I'd like to see some evidence for the fact claimed that the Roman Church controlled the fish industry. I've never encountered this claim before, and it strikes me as unlikely.

Sounds a bit fishy to me.   Wink
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.
