Their substitutes were taking forever to get off the pitch.
Their goalkeeper, coupled with lots of brilliant saves, was taking light years to take his goal kicks.
Their players were taking their time for throw ins and restarting play from fouls.
Basically they were wasting as much time as they could.

And it almost worked... Almost.

So for me it was yesterday at The Emirates when the deadlock broke in our favour, watching a London derby where the Gunners battled an entrenched, dogged and firmly bolted to the bottom of the league Hammers team intent on settling for a 0-0 draw.

The tensions and frustrations were mounting and mounting.  But then in the 88th minute, two minutes before Arsenal were about to give me another aneurysm... Clichy cut into the box from the left flank and for once delivered a dangerous cross which the unmarked Song latched onto with a diving header finding the back of the net in no uncertain terms.  The whole stadium erupted... well except the Hammers fans who got due comeuppance for their petulance.

All of a sudden there was an urgency from West Ham in restarting play. But there was only a few minutes to go .

The celebration came from such tension that I pulled my right gluteus maximus from standing up too hard and fast and I didn't notice it  until I sat back down, ouch, I had to limp out of the stadium.

Hugs are over-used in modern society, they should only ever be employed when your country wins the world cup or if you are consoling someone in grief. Some girls throw them out left, right and center, thus destroying their inherent virtue.

For 30 seconds, this was like winning the world cup.

Yes because usually one doesn't need to be drunk to enjoy the game when they play unlike back in the George Graham days and I tend to go on the fags when I drink so not a good idea.  Are you still following Southampton?
