Topic: Why? Posted: 31 Jul 2017 at 17:17 |
Why do you think it is that many members, particularly new members, post one article, and then are never heard of again?
Many of those topics are interesting and could lead to a good discussion if only the member would add further information, argue or discuss their point.
Come on guys, let's hear from you.

Not sure why.
Someone (all of us) here, will make an effort to welcome new threads and comments.
People may not want to get into verbal sparring, but that's always been part of the forum's appeal IMHO.
Everyone who isn't us ..are now super productive, multi tasking future people and we have been left on an endless loop like a 33 vinyl record.

Sad, I frequently make myself target for people to have a go at, to debate, or to argue with, but zilch.
I try my hardest to stimulate conversation but that's not working either,oh well, press on regardless.

How can one possibly compete with Trump and twitter?
I think of the way Donald uses twitter as being a kind verbal ejaculation, whereas a forum is more like a subtle flirtation.
and I don't know what Facebook is....

Do you think that Twitter, Facebook and the like are ruining the art of discussion and debate, particularly on-line?

I really don't know about Facebook, never been on it, but I get the impression that you sign up, and the rules change, and you have to "opt out" of new rules if you don't want them, the rules changes are automatic otherwise. I am not sure what the value of staying in touch with people you "knew" in elementary school, and I find it hilarious that some people have "unfriend" their "mother" because "she" is 'too' close for comfort.
I think people live too much these days, vicariously through others. They are always wanting to be somewhere else, if they are in Denver, then they want to be in San Francisco. Problem is, if they went there, they would still be with themselves and they would think somewhere else would be the answer.
The advantages of conspiracy theories, is that they make people feel persecuted, and thus important. I think that twitter makes people think they are important too, in perhaps a different way than conspiracy theories do, although there may be some overlap. But I don't really know directly about twitter either.
A problem for our society is too much information, gigo. Cream floats to the top, but so does pond scum. You got to figure out which model to use.

I'm not sure but perception of the site's value seems to be part of it. The reliance and familiarity of social media is one thing but that would affect those who have grown into it, and let's be honest, users of that sort of environment are not usually blessed with any historical interest or insight. Perhaps a few videos of people falling over might help? :D One has to conclude that a relative minority of interested parties would find a history forum any value. It's great for me, I love the subject now I'm older and more appreciative of it. Some sites have a much better known reputation of course.

I'm often driven to wonder where our friend Frank comes from, which planet I mean.
Even I know what Facebook and Twitter are.

Are you saying that Donald Trump is the reason that some members hit and run, never to be heard from again?
Why not keep it simple and address the question which is the OP?

Now do you see this? It's Trump derangement syndrome. This allows you to ignore violent fascists in your own country while trying to label the other side as such. Nanny P. I mean. fransicosan is the epitome of exactitude.

Was this intended for me? If so, I don't get what you mean. I was opposing Frankys comment, it doesn't make sense.
Yes, we have violent fascists in our country, in the very small minority, and mostly not seen or heard from.
If you were intending this for me, I don't know who you mean by the other side or Nanny P.
The far right wing organisations in our country are small and ineffective, but they're not ignored.

That being the case,
Now do you see this? It's Trump derangement syndrome. | is there any need for the word "Trump" at all?
I think derangemet syndrome says it all.
