I was lucky in that I grew up on the Mississippi in a town called Fort Madison Ia. Ft Madison was originally a fort from about 1808 to about 1813 that was burned in that year so the Indians could not get it.

Folks say the orignal fort was up on the bluff north of town Ft Madison being between a bluff and the Mississippi River. In the mid 90's a new Fort was built to get some tourisim into town. Fort Madison is an old river town with some picturesc views and old builings plus our brick streets. As you can gather we have celebrated our 200th birtday although I believe the actual town was founded in 1819 or so but please don't quote me on that.

Very interesting Semper.

On my trips to the US I have visited two of the old forts from the indian wars...
Fort Bedford on the Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania:
Visited more times - interesting collections in the museeum.

Fort Cumberland in Maryland:
Visiting the remains of this fort which are located under a church - including an old tunnel from the fort leading right down to the banks of the Potomac River.
The priest gave us a full tour.
