This "new" carrier is an incomplete Russian built "Heavy aircraft carrying cruiser" which is designed to double a a battleship. China bought two of them turning one into a Casino and this one into a functioning carrier. It is still smaller than anything the US currently has however don't underestimate the chinese, once they have the know how they would be able to build half dozen of them simultaneously without sweating.

Paul, are those F-35's in the last picture with the aircraft carriers?

Yup, those are undeniably F-35 Lightnings. Probably the Lightning II or III. Great planes. I didn't know Britain used them.

The RAF typically now uses EF-2000 Eurofighter Typhoons (Generally Tier 4 and above) which are incredible planes, but I can't disagree on their Royal Navy choice for carrier aircraft, as F-35s are incredibly capable for multirole missions, be it air defense or surface attack.

Here's an update.

HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first carrier, will be mothballed immediately it is launched in 2016, according to existing plans. The second, HMS Prince of Wales, will be able to put to sea by 2020, but it is not known how many planes will be able to fly from it – nor what kind.

Theme is "Anchor's Aweigh". Interesting that they included the laid up battle ships. Most people don't realize, even though the navy is shrinking over the normal budgetary cuts, it doesn't necessarily mean the ships are of no further use and are immediately scrapped, even with the current global financial problems. They're laid up in case of a national emergency or in certain cases sold to a country interested in adding a ship to it's fleet.
