The word "Impi" is generally used to describe the Zulu War Battalions, particularly under the leadership of Shaka or Chaka.

Shaka was an instinctive leader who implemented battle tactics which were used for decades, even against firearms.

One of his most successful tactics was the "Horns of the Buffalo", a tactic where the main force would face off against the enemy, and at the last moment, the two flanks would move ahead of the main force to encircle the enemy.

He initiated the use of a smaller spear, much easier to carry and which could also be used as a stabbing weapon; smaller more manageable but stronger shields and arranged his forces according to age and experience.

Was Shaka the pre-eminent war chief of his time in Southern Africa, or were there other contenders for that title?
It's not that I was born in Ireland,
It's the Ireland that was born in me.

For his time? Yes, i definitely think so.

But for other chieftains of   rival tribes after Shaka's time, I don't know honestly if the later Zulu kingdom in the latter part of the 19th century would have survived much longer anyways, whether Europeans were colonizing the Southern part of Africa or not.

What causes you to think this?

Was there no worthy successor to Shaka-to lead the Impis in battle?

The rise, expansion and absorptions of other tribes by of the Zulu's gave me the impression that they had far more enemies looking to regain what they had lost since the early part of the 19th century. Regardless of the social advances the Zulu's had made. It was at the top where the Zulu kingdom was the weakest and the most chaotic.
So i figured, aside from a outside regional force intervention,  the Kingdom may have lasted into the early 20th century, but no further than the mid part of it due to the leadership dynamics of constant power struggles, assassinations and plotting for the throne would have eventually weakened it sufficiently enough for it's enemies to possibly use this to regain what they had lost in the 19th century. But this is a hypothesis (Probably not a well thought out one) not being born out by historical reality.
